The machine does not isolate us from the great problems of nature but plunges us more deeply into them.
Antonie de Saint-Exupéry

The electric guitar itself does not produce a sound: it translated the motions of a vibrating string into a electrical signal. The sound of the lectric guitar is a more pure manifestation of string vibration than almost any other instrument.
James Prichett

In my music, improvisation and composition are two sides of the same coin, the difference being how I use TIME: Time as THE NOW (improvisation) versus Time as DRAMA (composition).
Tim Brady

Is there another instrument that makes you feel like you're on center stage at the state fairgrounds amphitheater, when in reality you're practicing in front of the mirror in your underwear ?  ...ahh, lost youth!
Steve Mackey

Steve Mackey

Tim Brady (b. 1956), composer and guitarist based in Montreal, is one of a new breed of musicians who find their inspiration in the diversity of contemporary musical media. His musical vision encompasses the range from chamber, orchestral and electroacoustic music, through compositions for dance and music theatre to free improvisation and contemporary jazz. He has released eight critically acclaimed CDs on Justin Time Records. He has been commissioned by numerous ensembles, orchestras and soloists in Canada, the United States, and Europe, and has performed, as soloist and with ensembles, in Canada, the USA, China, Japan, Australia, and Europe.
"Invention #8 ...of Julie's Dance... is music taken from a duet between solo electric guitar and solo dancer which uses distortion, digital delay, and a volume pedal to create slowly moving textural work based around the note D. It is part of the music/dance collaboration Inventions, created by Tim Brady and  choreographer Julie West in 1989. The tape music for Minimal Surface was created at the studios of INA/GRM in Paris, using their SYTER system to manipulate electric guitar sounds, and the slide part is an expressive melodic line moving freely between the harmonic poles of A minor and C minor . For the past 20 years I have collected, largely at random, a bunch of musical toys, bells, small instruments and whistles which I keep in a cardboard box which we call "Tim's Noise Makers" or the "music box".  Every so often my friends and I take out these toys (usually at holidays, birthdays and other special ocassions) and improvise performances which we call "noise sumphonies". Music Box Bell Curves (Hello Paris!)  uses samples of these instruments as its basic sound material in a piece which  reflects both the spirit of "noise" and "party" that I associate with these instruments. The work was commissioned by INA-GRM (Radio-France) and premiered in Paris in February 2001, so I thought we should say hello. Thanks to the "Sonic Party Singers" - Colleen Curran, Peggy Curran, Katie Curran, Sheila McGovern and Joan Robicheau, and a double thanks to Joan Robicheau who was so helpful during the sampling session." Mauro Franceschi (b. 1960) is a guitarist and composer from Bolzano, Italy. He has performed in various chamber ensembles as well as with orchestra. In 2000 he began touring his "Classical contemporary electric guitar" project, which he performed in Italy and Argentina, where he also conducted masterclasses. This project was recorded in 2002 by ARX Collana. The CD "Electric guitar solo" is on distribution by Materiali Sonori. In 2005 he recorded "Quinte", incidental music for theater and other media by Mauro Franceschi. He has recorded for the Italian television and broadcast network RAI3, Radio RAI international, and for Radio Clasica Argentina as a performer and composer.
"Ghost is a quiet piece of music in whic i like to show some possibilities of the elctric guitar commbined with cheep electronics equipment (phrasesampler, delay and pitch shift)." M.F.

"A Cairn is a pile of stones used to mark a gravesite. I wrote the piece as a gift to friends of mine commemorating their loss.  Grungy : no irony here. Is there another instrument that makes you feel like you're on center stage at the state fairgrounds amphitheater, when in reality you're practicing in front of the mirror in your underwear? ...ahh, lost youth!"   S.M.

Loren MazzaCane (b. 1949), guitarist and composer based in New York, has produced a series of mostly solo electric guitar recordings released on independent labels since the late 1970's. Guitar Player magazine cited his "microtonal blues/raga inflections that wash the listener like a confluence of the Mississippi and the Ganges". His discs are often suites organized around events, figures and places from Irish history.
Moonyean is a solo version by Mauro Franceschi adapted from the original version for two guitars which opens Loren's CD of the same name.

"Invention #8 ...of Julie's Dance... "Un Cairn è un tumulo di pietre, usato per segnalare il luogo di una sepoltura. Ho scritto il pezzo come un omaggio ad un amico, per commemorare la sua scomparsa. Grungy: senza ironia.
